Bose–Einstein statistics - 100th year

❖ In 1924, Satyendra Nath Bose, had discovered the correct set of equations to use to work out the behaviour of collections of photons (particles of light). ❖ Albert Einstein translated it to German, and sent it to a journal himself. ❖ This year marks 100 years of Bose’s discovery. ❖ His collaboration with the Albert Einstein had eventually led to postulation of B– E statistics. ❖ It explains how particles distribute themselves in an available energy state. ❖ The Particles which obey B–E statistics principle is referred as “Bosons”, named after S. N Bose.

COP 29 - International Carbon Market Standards

❖ COP29 agreed the UN-backed carbon market standards pertaining to Article 6 of the Paris climate agreement. ❖ It defines how countries can voluntarily use the carbon credits to meet carbon emission reduction targets set out in their nationally determined contributions. ❖ It also guarantees that the emission reductions and removals are real, additional, verified, and measurable. ❖ Article 6 was proposed in the 2015 UN Paris Agreement. ❖ It is an international framework that allows countries to achieve the national emission mitigation targets via a market-based mechanism. ❖ Private sector also plays a key role in the mechanism. ❖ The Key Sections of this Article are 6.2, 6.4, and 6.8, covering non-market approaches.

New Water Pollution Penalty Rules 2024

❖ The Union Environment Ministry has notified new rules for holding inquiry and imposing penalties for the violations of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. ❖ The new Rules – Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) (Manner of Holding Inquiry and Imposition of Penalty) rules, 2024, came into effect immediately. ❖ As per the recent amendment, offences and violations of the Act were decriminalised, replacing them with penalties instead. ❖ Non-polluting ‘white’ category industries are exempt from prior permissions. ❖ It has allowed the Centre to appoint officers to adjudicate offences, violations and determine penalties. ❖ The Central Pollution Control Board, State Pollution Control Boards, and Pollution Control Committees are also involved. ❖ The adjudication officer then has powers to issue notice to persons against whom complaints have been filed, detailing the nature of contravention alleged or committed. ❖ The alleged violator could defend themselves or through a legal representative.

State of the Climate 2024 Report

❖ The WMO's State of the Climate 2024 report was released during the United National Climate Conference (COP29), in Baku, Azerbaijan. ❖ The report issued a red alert as the year 2024 is on track to be the warmest year on record. ❖ From January to September of this year, the global average temperature was 1.54 degrees above the pre-industrial level. ❖ However, long-term warming measures over decades remain below 1.5 degrees. ❖ WMO report says from 2014-2023, global mean sea level rose at a rate of 4.77 mm per year. ❖ It was more than double the rate between 1993 and 2002. ❖ India experienced extreme weather events on 93% of the days in the first nine months of the year ❖ Punjab and Haryana were the worst hit, as they experienced extreme weather events on 34 days. ❖ They were followed by Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan that experienced extreme weather events on 27 and 26 days, respectively.
