Renaming of Port Blair

❖ Port Blair, the capital city of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, will now be known as ‘Sri Vijaya Puram’. ❖ The city of Port Blair is the entry point of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. ❖ It was named after Archibald Blair, a naval surveyor and lieutenant in the Bombay Marine. ❖ Blair was the first officer to carry out a thorough survey of the Andaman Islands. ❖ After joining the Bombay Marine in 1771, Blair set out on a survey mission along the coasts of India, Iran, and Arabia next year. ❖ In December 1778, Blair left for his first surveying voyage to the Andamans from Calcutta, along with two ships, Elizabeth and Viper. ❖ Historical records suggest that the Andaman Islands were used as a strategic naval base by the 11th century Chola emperor, Rajendra I. ❖ It was used to carry out an attack on Srivijaya, which is in present day Indonesia. ❖ As per an inscription found at Thanjavur dated to 1050 CE, the Cholas referred to the island as Ma-Nakkavaram land, which possibly led to the modern name of Nicobar under the British

Human-Made Meteor Shower

❖ Debris from a two-year-old Nasa mission could be the cause of first man-made meteor shower. ❖ Nasa's Double Asteroids Redirect Test (DART) mission, intentionally collided with the moonlet Dimorphos in September 2022. ❖ It may result in this unique phenomenon. ❖ The mission is aimed to test asteroid deflection technology. ❖ Scientists now believe the impact produced over 2 million pounds of debris that could create meteor showers around Earth and Mars within 10 to 30 years. ❖ Due to the collision, fragments from Dimorphos could intermittently and periodically arrive at Earth and Mars for at least 100 years. ❖ The debris is traveling at 1,118 miles per hour could reach Mars. ❖ The smaller and faster particles moving at 3,579 miles per hour could reach Earth in under 10 years.

PM E- DRIVE திட்டம்.

PM E-Drive scheme

❖ The Union Cabinet has approved “PM-eBus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism (PSM) scheme” and "PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme". ❖ PSM scheme will support the deployment of more than 38,000 electric buses (eBuses) from FY 2024-25 to FY 2028-29. ❖ ₹3,679 crore will be provided as subsidies for purchasing e-two wheelers, e-three wheelers, e-ambulances, e-trucks, and other emerging electric vehicles (EVs) under the PM E-Drive scheme. ❖ The heavy industries ministry will implement the scheme and provide subsidies to both the buyer and manufacturer e-vouchers through a dedicated portal.
