Statue of archaeologist John Marshall

❖ The Tamil Nadu government will install a life-size statue of British archaeologist John Marshall to mark 100 years of the discovery of the Indus Valley Civilisation. ❖ Marshall was the director-general of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) from 1902 to 1928. ❖ During this time the Harappa and Mohanjodaro, two main cities that comprise the Indus Valley Civilisation, were discovered. ❖ 100 years ago, on 20th September 1924, Sir John Marshall had announced the discovery of the Indus Valley Civilisation.

CM Research Fellowship 2024

❖ The state government has sanctioned ₹50 lakh for giving a fellowship of ₹1 lakh each to 50 students with the disabilities under the Chief Minister’s Research Fellowship. ❖ The fellowship would support their research for their Ph.D. program. ❖ Only students with disabilities, pursuing Ph.D., are eligible ❖ There is no bar on the income and candidates should pursue Ph.D. either parttime or full time at any recognised educational institution in the country.

Next Generation Launch Vehicle

States Contribution in GDP

❖ Southern states have outperformed northern states in GDP contribution and per capita income. ❖ Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu collectively contribute 30 per cent of the country’s GDP. ❖ Maharashtra continues to be the largest contributor to India’s GDP, although its share has dropped to 13.3 per cent from over 15 per cent previously. ❖ Maharashtra's per capita income has risen to 150.7 per cent of the national average as of March 2024. ❖ Uttar Pradesh’s share dropped from 14 per cent in 1960-61 to 9.5 per cent. ❖ Bihar, the third-most populous state, contributes just 4.3 per cent. ❖ West Bengal, once a top contributor with 10.5 per cent of GDP in 1960-61 now accounts for only 5.6 per cent.
