Landslide - Papua New Guinea

❖ A massive landslide struck Papua New Guinea's highlands recently. ❖ The disaster hit an isolated part of Enga province. ❖ At least six villages have been affected due to the disaster. ❖ Landslides happen when the pull from gravity exceeds the strength of the geomaterial forming the slope of a hill or mountain. ❖ Geomaterials can be as varied as rocks, sand, silt and clays. ❖ Most natural landslides are triggered by earthquakes or rainfall, or a combination of both. ❖ Papua and New Guinea is one of the wettest places on the earth.

Impact of Pudhumai pen schemes

❖ The enrolment percentage of girl students in higher education has increased by 34% due to the Pudhumani Penn scheme. ❖ It aims to provide a monthly aid of ₹1,000 to girl students, who had studied from Class VI to XII in State government-run schools and are pursuing higher education.  ❖ About 2.73 lakh girl students are benefitting from the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Higher Education Assurance Scheme

நேட்டோ அமைப்பின் ஆறு உறுப்பினர் நாடுகள் ரஷ்யாவின் அண்டை நாடுகளுடன் இணைந்து தங்கள் எல்லைகளைப் பாதுகாக்க "ஆளில்லா விமானங்கள் கொண்ட ஒரு கவச அமைப்பினை" கட்டமைக்கின்றன. ஆளில்லா வான்வழி வாகனங்கள் மற்றும் பல்வேறு மேம்பட்ட கண்காணிப்பு தொழில் நுட்பங்களின் கலப்பினைப் பயன்படுத்தி இந்த கட்டமைப்பு கட்டமைக்கப்பட உள்ளது. * எல்லை நடவடிக்கைகளைத் தொடர்ந்து கண்காணிப்பதற்காக என்று இந்த ஆளில்லா விமானங்களில் பல்வேறு உணர்விகள் மற்றும் ஒளிப்படக் கருவிகள் பொருத்தப் பட்டு இருக்கும். இதில் பங்கு கொள்ளும் நாடுகள் லிதுவேனியா மற்றும் அதன் பால்டிக் அண்டை நாடுகளான லாட்வியா மற்றும் எஸ்டோனியா, அத்துடன் போலந்து, பின்லாந்து மற்றும் நார்வே ஆகியனவாகும். 2023 ஆம் ஆண்டில் நேட்டோ அமைப்பில் இணைந்த பின்லாந்து, ரஷ்யாவுடன் 832 மைல் எல்லையைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்கிறது.

‘Drone wall’ against Russia

❖ Six NATO countries neighbouring Russia are joining forces to build a “drone wall” to protect their borders. ❖ The “drone wall” will be constructed using a combination of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and advanced surveillance technologies. ❖ The drones will be equipped with various sensors and cameras to monitor border activities continuously.  ❖ The states taking part are Lithuania and its Baltic neighbours Latvia and Estonia, as well as Poland, Finland, and Norway. ❖ Finland, which joined NATO in 2023, shares an 832-mile border with Russia.

BIMSTEC Charter 2024

❖ BIMSTEC now open to new members and observers after a historic first charter of the grouping came into force.  ❖ The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation grouping has acquired a ‘legal personality’ . ❖ It will be able to enter into structured diplomatic dialogue with other groupings and countries. ❖ BIMSTEC was formed in 1997 but for a long time, the organization could not form consensus among its seven member states. ❖ The members are Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, Myanmar and India.

Salem Central Prison

Salem Central Prison, previously designated as a facility for habitual offenders, has now been reclassified as a casual prison. ❖ Constructed by the British in 1862, Salem Central Prison includes an annex built in 1934 to accommodate adolescent prisoners.  ❖ After 162 years, the Home Department reclassified Salem Central Prison as a casual prison. ❖ Salem Central Prison hosts several factories and an open-air prison (farm jail).

சேலம் மத்திய சிறை

முன்னதாக வாடிக்கையான குற்றவாளிகளுக்கான இடமாக நியமிக்கப்பட்ட சேலம் மத்தியச் சிறையானது, தற்போது சாதாரண சிறைச்சாலையாக மாற்றப்பட்டுள்ளது.  1862 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஆங்கிலேயர்களால் கட்டமைக்கப்பட்ட சேலம் மத்திய சிறைச் சாலையானது 1934 ஆம் ஆண்டு இளம் வயது கைதிகளை தங்க வைப்பதற்காக என்று கட்டமைக்கப் பட்ட ஒரு பின் இணைப்புப் பகுதியினை உள்ளடக்கியதாகும். 162 ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகு, உள்துறை அமைச்சகம் ஆனது சேலம் மத்தியச் சிறையை சாதாரண சிறைச்சாலையாக மறுவகைப்படுத்தியது. சேலம் மத்தியச் சிறைச்சாலையில் பல தொழிற்சாலைகள் மற்றும் ஒரு திறந்தவெளி சிறை (பண்ணை வேலைகள் மேற்கொள்ளும் வகையிலான சிறை) உள்ளது.

eVTOL aircrafts

❖ IIT Madras-incubated ePlane Company is set to launch eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft in Bengaluru. ❖ eVTOLs are designed to operate in urban areas, reducing traffic congestion, and air pollution, and improving connectivity and emergency services. ❖ These are vehicles that can take off and land vertically using electric propulsion. ❖ It is expected to cut through the road traffic for daily commute and cargo delivery and even be used for military purposes.
