Indian Gaur in Srisailam Tiger Reserve

❖ An Indian gaur (bos gaurus) has been spotted in the Atmakur stretch of Nallamala forest in Andhra Pradesh’s Nandyal district. ❖ The forest was once home to the Indian gaur (Adavi Dunna in Telugu), which strangely disappeared from the landscape for a long time. ❖ The Indian gaur was last found here in the 1870s, and hence it has made a reappearance after 150 years.   ❖ The Gaur also called Indian Bison, is the largest extant bovine, native to South Asia and Southeast Asia. ❖ Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve is the largest tiger reserve in India.

Renegotiation of Ganga Waters Treaty

❖ India and Bangladesh signed the Ganga Waters Treaty in 1996. ❖ This pact is mostly focused about the fair sharing of water from the Ganga River, needs to be renewed in 2026. ❖ Water availability changes because of extreme weather, changing rainfall trends, and melting glaciers. ❖ This is a key issue in the renegotiation of the treaty.

மண் பற்றிய யுனெஸ்கோ சர்வதேச மாநாடு மொராக்கோவில் நடைபெற்றது.2050 ஆம் ஆண்டுக்குள் பூமியின் சுமார் 90 சதவீத நிலப்பரப்பு சிதைந்துவிடும் என்று யுனெஸ்கோ எச்சரித்துள்ளது. -உலக பாலைவனமாதல் வரைபடத்தின் படி, 75 சதவீத மண் ஏற்கனவே சீரழிந்துள்ளது என்ற நிலையில் இது நேரடியாக 3.2 பில்லியன் மக்களையும் பாதிக்கிறது. -தற்போதைய நிலை வழக்கம் போல் இனியும் தொடர்ந்தால் இதன் போக்கு 2050 ஆம் ஆண்டுக்குள் தாக்கத்தை 90 சதவீதமாக அதிகரிக்கக்கூடும். இந்தியாவில், சுமார் 32% நிலம் சீரழிந்தும், 25% நிலம்  பாலைவனமாகியும் வருகிறது

❖ This year marks the 350th year since the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji.  ❖ The coronation of Shivaji as the king of the Marathas was conducted on June 6, 1674 at Raigad fort. ❖ The exhibition depicting 115 oil paintings of Shivaji Maharaj was organised by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) and the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) recently.

New World Soil Health Index

❖ The UNESCO International Conference on Soils held in Morocco. ❖ UNESCO warned that a staggering 90 per cent of the planet’s land surface could be degraded by 2050. ❖ According to the World Atlas of Desertification, 75 per cent of soils are already degraded, directly affecting 3.2 billion people.  ❖ If business as usual continues, the current trend may increase the impact to 90 per cent by 2050. ❖ In India, about 32% of land is under degradation and 25% is undergoing desertification.

Agenda for the 16th Finance Commission 2024

❖ The 16th Finance Commission (FC) has begun its work, primarily focusing on the devolution of the consolidated fund. ❖ It was established under Article 280 of the Indian Constitution. ❖ In the absence of the 2021 Census, reliance on 2011 data is inadequate for the evidence-based fiscal devolution. ❖ India has approximately 4,000 statutory towns and an equal number of Census towns, with an estimated 23,000 villages, all of which are effectively urban. ❖ These figures must be captured by the 16th FC, including the significant migration to Tier-2 and 3 cities. ❖ Intergovernmental transfers (IGTs) to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in India are about 0.5% of GDP. ❖ It is much lower than the 2-5% typical of other developing nations. ❖ For instance, South Africa allocates 2.6%, Mexico 1.6%, the Philippines 2.5%, and Brazil 5.1% of their GDPs to their cities. ❖ Increasing the quantum of IGTs as a percentage of GDP is necessary.
